WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. - The Town of Delmar is also known as "The Little Town Too Big For One State."

Athletes and fans of Delmar High School sports come from both states that give the town its name.

But in a place like Delmarva, state lines are no boundary. Tragedy in one town is tragedy for all.

"I think it's heartbreaking, because it's like, that was a classmate, that was a teacher's student, that was someone you saw in the hallways, that was a friend," said Lauren Salzbach-Oliveira, a junior at Parkside High School in Salisbury.

Salzbach-Oliveira was referring to Carter Figgs, a Delmar High School junior who died in a car accident Saturday morning.

Figgs was an athlete who participated in wrestling and football. Thursday evening's football game against Lake Forest was the first game Delmar played without Figgs.

To show support for Delmar, students and faculty across Wicomico County dressed in the Wildcats' trademark blue and orange.

"The whole school was wearing blue and orange today," said Takai Hugee, a senior at Wicomico High School. "All the principals, all the teachers, everybody was in blue and orange. It looked like Delmar."

The display might seem strange. Wicomico County schools don't normally play Delmar High School, which is in a different athletic conference.

But Thursday's colors show they all have each others' backs.

"I mean it tells us that we're all in this together, we're all here for them," said Julia Gore, a junior at Parkside High School. "Even if we're not in the same state or same school, we're still in support of it."

Wicomico High School senior and football player Jordan Hayman echoed that sentiment.

"I like to think bigger than football," Hayman said. "We all come together for one goal at the end of the day, know what I'm saying. So it's hard for everybody, not just that one team, hard for everybody."

In all times, whether happy or sad, no state or conference boundary overcomes what brings the peninsula together, the Delmarva spirit.
