The Sheriff's Office says scammers are calling residents using a number that looks like it is from the Wicomico Sheriff's Office. The caller ID also says the call is from the office. The number is actually an internet-based number and not the Sheriff's Office.
The caller on the phone will then give details about the resident in an attempt to make it seem real. They will then ask for money be transferred to the scammer, so the resident can avoid being in trouble with the court system.
The Wicomico Sheriff's Office will never contact residents and ask money over the phone for legal assistance. The Sheriff's Office encourages those who receive a call to not give out information and to contact law enforcement
