Prosecutors have asked for a September retrial for Harvey Weinstein, who was back in a New York courtroom for the first time since his 2020 rape conviction was overturned by an appeals court last week. Prosecutors on Wednesday suggested locking in a date after Labor Day for the retrial. The 72-year-old disgraced movie mogul remains detained because of a 2022 rape conviction in Los Angeles that netted a 16-year prison sentence. Weinstein maintains his innocence. The New York Court of Appeals vacated his conviction Thursday, after concluding a trial judge permitted jurors to see and hear too much evidence not directly related to the charges.

Authorities are expanding their investigation of clergy sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in New Orleans to include church leaders suspected of shielding predatory priests and failing to report crimes to law enforcement. Louisiana State Police last week carried out a sweeping search warrant at the Archdiocese of New Orleans targeting a long-secreted cache of church records and communications between church leaders and the Vatican about the handling of clergy sexual abuse claims. The warrant revealed new details about the sex-trafficking investigation. Church officials in New Orleans and the Vatican did not respond to requests for comment.

The Mexican consul general in Nogales says his foreign ministry is displeased with the decision not to retry an Arizona rancher accused in the fatal shooting of a Mexican man on his property. Marcos Moreno Baez said Tuesday his consulate would continue to follow any possible further developments in the case that was tried against George Alan Kelly. The rancher had been charged in the fatal shooting of Gabriel Cuen-Buitimea on his property near the U.S. southern border. The jury deadlocked last week on a verdict following a monthlong trial. The prosecution said Monday it would not seek a retrial.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported that a tycoon's death sentence has been commuted to 20 years in prison after he returned around $2.1 billion in assets from illegally selling oil abroad. IRNA cited a spokesman for the judiciary in its report on Tuesday. The 48-year-old Babak Zanjani was sentenced to death in 2016 over a number of charges. They included money laundering, forgery and fraud that disrupted the country’s economy. IRNA quoted judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir as saying that an appeal for amnesty by Zanjani was reviewed and his death sentence was “commuted to 20 years of prison term after approval by the Supreme Leader.“ Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final say on all state matters and occasionally issues pardons.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has ruled that a former Milwaukee police officer was properly fired for posting racist memes related to the arrest of an NBA player. Milwaukee Officer Erik Andrade was involved in the 2018 arrest of Sterling Brown, who played at the time for the Milwaukee Bucks. Andrade was not involved with the arrest of Brown, but did transport him after his arrest. Andrade was fired after being suspended for violating the department’s code of conduct related to his social media posts, not for his conduct during the Brown arrest. The state Supreme Court ruled 5-2 on Tuesday that Andrade's due process rights were not violated.

Donald Trump's hush money case resumes Tuesday with testimony from Gary Farro. He's a banker who helped Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen open accounts. A former National Security Agency employee who sold classified information to an undercover FBI agent he believed to be a Russian official has been sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison, the penalty requested by government prosecutors. U.S. District Judge Raymond Moore said Monday that he could have put 32-year-old Jareh Sebastian Dalke behind bars for even longer. He called the 262-month sentence “mercy” for what he saw as a calculated action to take the job at the NSA in order to be able to sell national security secrets.
