The 100th Chincoteague Pony Swim drew thousands to the shores of the Assateague Channel on Wednesday morning as the Saltwater Cowboys once again led the herd across the water in one of Virginia’s most enduring traditions.
CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. -- An early start to the day just means there's more time for fun, and that was certainly the case on Chincoteague on Wednesday.
Before houses, shops and attractions lined Main Street on Chincoteague Island, there once stood an ice cream shop, a hotel, a post office and a factory. Just over 100 years ago, the island was filled with dirt roads and wood and brick buildings, according to assistant director of the Museum of Chincoteague Island Cindy Faith. “It looks sort of like any movie set that you would have seen out west depicting the turn of the century,” Faith said.
The annual Chincoteague Pony Beach Walk took place along the coast of Assateague Island, VA, on Monday morning. The event takes place ahead of the 100th Chincoteague Pony Swim, scheduled for Wednesday.
The centennial Chincoteague Pony Swim is taking place on July 30, but a whole week of events precedes the swim.
The Chincoteague Island Pony Swim is celebrating 99 years of festivities on Wednesday, though there are centuries of history behind the swim from Assateague to Chincoteague Island.
