GEORGETOWN, DE - The town of Georgetown is looking to implement new measures to safeguard the purity of its water supply.

An ordinance is being read at tonight's Georgetown town council meeting concerning the enforcement of water cross connections. This is where public water and private water supplies meet, and can be a potential source of contamination.

Under this ordinance, town officials would have the authority to access private properties connected to the town's water supply to inspect piping systems. Refusal of entrance to town officials can be considered evidence of a potential cross connection. A violation can result in fines and shutdown of town water to the business' or residence.

Some residents, like Tammy Burwell, view it as a positive step to protect public health.

"We're talking about people's health here. If you're supporting your community, you want to make sure we all stay healthy."

Georgetown Mayor Bill West says the town has an obligation to maintain a safe water system for its residents.

"The possibility of contamination affecting the entire water system that serves 7,200 people is a serious concern. We want to prevent that as much as possible." said West.
