Firefighter Injured, 5 Horses Die in Seaford Area Fire

SEAFORD, Del.- A horse stable fire left a firefighter injured and five horses dead outside Seaford on Monday morning, according to investigators. 

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office said the incident happened shortly after 7 a.m. at a 130-foot by 30-foot horse stable located on the 10000 block of Airport Road.

The Blades Volunteer Fire Company, assisted by the Laurel, Seaford, Bridgeville, and Greenwood volunteer fire companies, responded to the scene to find heavy fire showing on one end of the structure and farm staff on scene rescuing horses.

One firefighter was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with minor burns to his feet and five horses perished during the rescue efforts.

The State Fire Marshal’s office responded to the scene to determine the origin and cause.   That investigation is continuing at this time. Total damages are estimated at $750,000.
