SALISBURY, Md.- According to the 2020 US Census, the total population of Wicomico County grew nearly five percent. But the data shows that the county also became more diverse. The Hispanic population grew nearly sixty percent over the last decade. The news was welcomed by Sara Anello.
"I think it's nice to see other people like me that have dark hair, brown eyes, identify as multi-racial or multi-ethnic. I'm a large portion Puerto Rican so it's really good to see a variety of people," said Anello. "It's beautiful, the, the range of different cultures, and just different expressions of dress and food its wonderful. I like to see the tapestry of humanity"
And it's all very exciting.
"Eastern Shore... it's growing! It's, it's rather quiet but the population is increasing and that's exciting," said Anello.
Nathalie Hall agrees.
"I'm actually born and raised from South America so um, came to the states when I was ten so I appreciate a good melting pot," said Hall.
Hall says it's important in building a better community.
"I think it gives new perspectives on different situations. You know if everyone had the same perspective everything would look the same. And who wants that? That's boring to me," said Hall.
Salisbury Mayor Jake Day says diversity builds a stronger community.
"Growing diversity is a strength for us. We're younger, more diverse, better educated and have a greater number of immigrants, both domestic and international in our community is a strength for us," said Day.
With the new census data, the Wicomico County Redistricting Committee chair said they will begin redrawing district lines.
