SALISBURY, Md.- Salisbury University alum Luke Campbell built his work ethic on the Eastern Shore. Now, he's traveling multiple shores to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the men's 400-meter hurdles for Team Germany.
Campbell won't be representing the red, white and blue, however. He is part of Team Germany. The American-born athlete holds dual U.S.-German citizenship.
"It's a great feeling...it's really indescribable. No matter what country you run for, it's just at the end of the day, to be able to represent your nation basically, it's just a really awesome feeling," Campbell said.
Campbell was on SU's track team from 2012 to 2016.
His coach Jim Jones says he couldn't be more proud.
"But I'm extremely excited for him to see him grow to this point and what he's going to be able to accomplish at the Olympic games," Jones said.
"It's just great to see the Seagull Nation reaching out and wishing him good luck," Jones continued.
Campbell says he is humbled by this once in a lifetime opportunity.
"I'm really happy just to be here and be able to take a part of something so special that so little people get to experience. So it's definitely a crazy experience for me," Campbell said.
Campbell says he doesn't just want to compete in the Olympics. He plans to make it to finals and take home the gold.
Jones says Campbell is one of just nine Division III athletes to make it to the Olympics and the first SU alum to do so.
