SALISBURY, Md. - Hundreds of cyclists are back in Salisbury. The33rd annual Seagull Century bike ride is back this year after having a virtual ride last year. For the past several years Bernie Murphy has won the number one spot in the ride and says this year everyone is happy to be back in person.
“2020 was tough and I did a virtual ride I drove back up here and rode around here because it was the right thing to do for me but being able to see all these people come back I have had so many people come up and talk to me about what they missed about connecting with friends that they had ridden with over the years,” Murphy said.
Mark Tillman and Jermaine Netherly came from Detroit and Houston respectively to complete the metric, a 62 mile bike ride from Salisbury to the Princess Anne area.
“I'm sure it's going to hit us a little later today but I feel great. it worked out, I didn't cramp up and love that it's flat,” Tillman said.
Netherly also said he felt good after the ride.
“I think that the adrenaline is still rolling so I'm good now but later I'll need a hot bath and a hot shower,” Netherly said.
Organizers say close to 4,000 riders participated in this year's event and hope they can welcome more next year. Salisbury University says some of the money raised from the event will go to faculty grants and student scholarships.
