CRISFIELD, Md. - A historic lighthouse marking watermen heritage off the coast of Crisfield is gone. The Somers Cove Lighthouse was damaged during Tuesday's storm. Also referred to as a legger, the light house which gets the name because it stands on five legs, was built in 1867. Ottis Tyler sails by the lighthouse daily.
“When you lose visibility you can pick it up on radar it's very easy to pick up but of course there are more beacons near by it, we all use them, but it was a good landmark,” Tyler said.
The lighthouse was renovated in 1937 and replaced with an automatic light. Former Crisfield mayor Kim Lawson says he will miss the old landmark.
“Going forward it will be another part of dashed history that will have to be told or related. It's a part of the water heritage of Crisfield that has been lost,” Lawson said.
Lawson says 10 years ago the legger suffered minor damage but after over 100 years at sea it finally collapsed Tuesday. A piece of Crisfield history is gone.
