Wicomico County Voters Choose To Elect School Board Members

Wicomico County voters choose to elect their school board members (WBOC)

SALISBURY, Md.- For the first time in Wicomico County history voters will decide who sits on their school board. Wicomico County is the last Maryland County to move to an elected school board as opposed to being appointed by the Governor.

The current seven members who now sit on the board will have to campaign for their seats in the future.

"I think it gives the voters here in Wicomico County especially, it gives us a little more say so in what happens with the school board instead of someone being up in Annapolis telling us who we're going to appoint for the school board," Jerry Richardson said.

Wicomico County School Superintendent, Donna Hanlin has experience working with both appointed and elected school boards. She said for her there is no real big difference in working with either. Hanlin said the overall goal remains the same.

Hanlin said, "I believe that the most important thing is that no matter whether it's elected or appointed that individuals are serving on the board because they have the interest of students in mind."

Wicomico County now joins the rest of Maryland public schools having elected school boards. According to Senate Bill #145 voters can expect to see the first election for their Wicomico County School Board Officials on the November 2018 ballot.
