DELMAR, Del. -- Randon Wilkerson, the man accused of killing Delmar Police Cpl. Keith Heacook more than two years ago, will stand trial on Monday in Georgetown.

Monday's murder trial will be what is called a bench trial. A bench trial is both heard and decided by a judge alone, involving no jury.

Wilkerson, 30, of Salisbury, Md., is facing two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, and 11 other crimes including multiple counts of first-degree assault.

Authorities said that on April 25, 2021 Wilkerson attacked Heacook, who was responding to a report of a fight at a home in Delmar. Wilkerson is also accused of attacking and injuring an elderly couple.

Heacook succumbed to his injuries three days after the assault.

Penny Glasgow was friends with Heacook for more than 20 years. Glasgow tells WBOC she has waited years to see justice served.

"There's anger there that we had to wait so long," says Glasgow. "I pray with everything in me that this man is convicted, but my common sense tells me that there's a chance that that will not happen."

Glasgow and others in the community plan to attend the trial.

Vickie Rohrer has supported Delmar law enforcement and Heacook's family since his death. She hopes Delmar can turn over a new leaf in the days following the trial.

"It'll be easier to heal once this is done and we can get past some of it," says Rohrer. "Hopefully for the Franklin's, I hope they can find comfort in knowing that he will never see the light of day."

However, for some, it will never be easier.

"There's still a son without a father, a wife without a husband, sisters and brothers without their brother," says Glasgow.

If convicted, Wilkerson faces life in prison. The trial may take up to a week.
