DELMAR, Del. & Md. - The parking lot at Delmar Middle and High Schools sat nearly empty Wednesday, but that wasn't the case at Delmar Elementary School.

After nasty weather lashed Delmarva Tuesday night, schools on both sides of the state line in Delmar expected a delayed opening Wednesday morning.

That changed shortly before 8 a.m. when persistent flooding prompted the Delmar School District to cancel classes at the Middle and High School.

The District also informed parents that Delaware students who attend Delmar Elementary (which is not in the Delmar School District, but in the Wicomico County School District), would not have school bus service Wednesday.

"If I had to have worked today it would have been a little bit of a juggle because of my husband's schedule and the other kids" said Delmar, Del. neighbor Heather Preston.

Even on the Maryland side, the rift between the "little town too big for one state" exposed by Tuesday night's weather was surprising.

"That's honestly a surprise to me," said Delmar, Md. neighbor Bridget Townsend, who in a few years will send her young son to Delmar Elementary. "I think that they would keep, somehow, a shuttle service with the buses for the kids so that they can get to school when they need to and the parents can get to work."

Shortly after the Delmar School District's announcement that the Middle and High schools would be closed, a lot of dismay was posted by people on social media.

But not everyone was upset by the surprise.

"I've never seen it done this way before, but hey, we deal with it," said Betty Messick, a Delmar, Del. neighbor. "This is life. You just deal with whatever comes."

WBOC reached out to the Delmar School District for an explanation of exactly why Delaware students did not receive school bus transportation, but a response was not received by Wednesday's deadline.
