Flamingo

A rare sighting occurred on Virginia's Eastern Shore as a pink flamingo was spotted near Assateague Beach. The flamingo was first observed at the beach on Monday and was still roaming the area on Tuesday.

The appearance of the flamingo led to a flurry of cell phone videos and pictures being posted on social media.

While there is no definite explanation for the flamingo's unexpected arrival, Assateague Park staff tells WBOC that recent hurricanes and storms may have disrupted its migration path.

Boater Mike Fiegiel, with Daisy Island Cruises, spotted the flamingo multiple times on Tuesday morning near Wallops Island.

"We had a cruise out with some birders, and we saw the flamingo. We had reports here that one had been here over the weekend, and we were able to find it." said Fiegel.

Larry Sells, who was still looking for a glimpse of the bird, said it's something he expects in Florida -- Not Virginia,

"When we're there, we see flamingos all the time. We don't see them here. It might be an oddity or migration. We don't know, but we're still looking." said Sells.

Sells says he has heard up to three flamingos have been spotted across  Assateague Island.
