U.S. - Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has taken a significant step towards becoming the next commissioner of the Social Security Administration.

In a vote Tuesday, November 28th, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee voted 17-10 to advance O’Malley’s nomination to a full Senate vote.

Democratic Senators Ben Cardin and Tom Carper, of Maryland and Delaware respectively, were among the Finance Committee members who voted favorably for O’Malley’s advancement.

President Joe Biden nominated O’Malley for the position in July. If confirmed, he would oversee one of the most expansive social programs in the country.

“Governor O’Malley is a lifelong public servant who has spent his career making government more accessible and transparent, while keeping the American people at the heart of his work,” Biden said over the summer. “As Governor, he made government work more effectively across his administration and enhanced the way millions of people accessed critical services.”

O’Malley previously served as Governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015.
