CRISFIELD, MD - After operating in the city for over 120 years, Handy Seafood has listed its processing plant in Crisfield up for sale.
According to a public real estate listing from SVN, the 59,700 square foot building on 5.57 acres is listed for $1.8 million in Somerset County.
A Handy Seafood spokesperson says operations will continue at the plant until a buyer is found.
"We sincerely thank the incredible people who have been our associates in Crisfield for so many years,” Executive Director of Handy Seafood Terry Conway said in a press release Thursday. “Their dedication and tireless work ethic, especially during peak season, were truly exceptional. We also extend our deepest appreciation to the watermen whose loyalty and commitment to quality have been essential to our success."
Handy began operations in Crisfield in 1894, according to the company’s website, and established their processing plant in 1903. The facility evolved to process soft crabs, oysters, crab cakes, and breaded seafood items.
Handy Seafood says that while the plant in Crisfield is for sale, their corporate headquarters will continue to operate in Salisbury. The company will also maintain processing of their signature products, according to the press release.
“We are deeply appreciative of the Crisfield community and the contributions of our employees and the watermen,” the press release reads. “Their legacy will remain a part of Handy Seafood’s history.”
