WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. -- Stephen Decatur and Cape Henlopen's chances for a state title have brought not only the players into the spotlight, but the cheer squads and bands as well. Both units are looking forward to performing on the biggest stage of high school football.

Decatur's cheer team is diligently perfecting their routine for Thursday night's game, while Cape Henlopen's band is ensuring they hit every note for Friday's matchup. Beyond the athletic prowess showcased on the field, these championship games are a source of pride for everyone involved. Just as players and coaches prepare rigorously, the cheer squads and bands invest a lot of effort into their performances.

Whether it's mastering a brand-new stunt or fine-tuning the fight song, both schools boast an abundance of talent, poised to demonstrate their skills this week. The varsity cheer team at Stephen Decatur is particularly eager for what could be a historic moment for their school.

Head Coach Courtney Nunn expressed her excitement, highlighting the success her squad and the football team have had.

"We've had a great season competition-wise as well, so it's just really cool that both teams were able to make it to states in the same season for the first time," said Nunn.

Junior cheerleader Jada Taylor acknowledged the rarity of this moment.

"It feels really cool because this is like a once in a lifetime experience," said Taylor.

Fans attending Thursday's game can anticipate an extra dose of excitement.

"We'll be doing our same game day cheers, throwing a few stunts in the air, and incorporating some tumbling on the track," said Nunn.

As for Cape Henlopen's band, who will be making the trip to the University of Delaware for the game, Assistant Director Elly Rolfes shared the band's exhilaration.

"To get to these playoffs and continue winning unexpectedly in such great, momentous ways has been so awesome," said Rolfes.

Christopher Runde, a member of Cape Henlopen's band, expressed the team's anticipation of performing at the UD Stadium.

"Everybody in this room, we're not intimidated by crowds. It's a resilient group of people, but we're super excited to go up to UD," said Runde. "It's not like any experience we've ever had with the people, the stands, all that. It's gonna be awesome."

While these teams may not be in the huddle, their readiness to contribute to their schools' pursuit of a state title is palpable. The culmination of the 2023 season is poised to be a memorable and historic moment for both Stephen Decatur and Cape Henlopen High Schools.
