MILFORD, Del. -- Delaware State Police said one person has died and five people were injured after a chain-reaction collision on Route 1 Friday afternoon.
It happened on Route 1 just south of the Thompsonville Road exit ramp shortly after 1 p.m.
A driver of a Pontiac Bonneville was traveling north on Route 1 when police said the driver wasn't paying proper attention to the road and hit a Toyota Rav-4 that driving in front of the Pontiac. Both cars were in motion at the time of the collision, which forced the Toyota Rav-4 to cross the median into the southbound lanes and hit a GMC Yukon in a near head-on collision.
Police said that second collision forced the GMC Yukon to hit a Mercury Grand Marquis that was driving southbound in the lane next to it. The Mercury was then forced off the road, where it hit a utility pole.
On Saturday, police identified the passenger of the Mercury as 75-year-old Rosemary Holmberg of Buffalo, New York. Police say Holmberg was taken to the hospital and later died from her injuries. The driver of the Mercury, a 76-year-old man also from New York, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Mercury was the fourth car hit in the crash, which struck a utility pole.
The driver of the Toyota Rav-4 -- the first car hit in the crash -- was a 52-year-old man of Rehoboth Beach. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The passenger in his car, a 46-year-old man from Millsboro, was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Yukon, a 47-year-old man from New Jersey, as well as his 53-year-old female passenger were both taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries. The Yukon was the third car hit in the incident.
According to state police, the driver of the Pontiac, Shane R. Fenimore, 28 of Millsboro, was not injured. DSP said a computer check revealed he had an active capias warrant from the Sussex County Court of Common Pleas. Fenimore was arrested.
DSP said the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
All of the drivers and the passengers involved in the crash were wearing their seat belts.
Route 1 was closed for about two hours after the crash.
