Woodland Ferry Captain House

WOODLAND, DE - In August of 2022, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) revealed plans to demolish and replace the Woodland Ferry Captain House across from the Woodland Ferry dock.

Despite the announcement, the house still stands, and some Woodland locals are actively resisting its removal.

The house is a converted residence that was used to house ferry workers, before it became a DelDOT building.

Joseph Massey, a resident of Woodland, initiated a petition, gathering over 200 signatures from people who want to preserve the old house.

"The people of Woodland, we just think it's something that's been here and should stay here like the rest of the historical sites." said Massey.

He emphasizes the community's connection to the building, as his ancestors not only worked there but also lived in the home. Massey says the house could be used to preserve community history,

"You're not even allowed in it, there's a sign right on the front door, no public bathroom, and the doors are locked all the time. I don't think there is anything wrong with having a little museum in there to show the people what was there." he continued.

But DelDOT isn't likely changing their plans, a statement from DelDOT Director of Community Relations C.R. Mcleod said:

'Our position remains the same since we announced this in 2022, that the current building does not have historical significance to be saved and that the new facility that is in design will fit with the character of the surrounding community. We do not have a timeline currently and will share more when the design is completed."
