LAUREL, Del. - The Delaware Division of Public Health has announced the successful rescue of a young German shepherd from a 30-foot culvert pipe in Laurel.
Officials say Delaware Animal Services was alerted to a possibly abandoned dog running in and out of a culvert pipe beneath Womach Road in Laurel on June 9. According to DPH, the dog made its way deep into the 30-foot pipe and needed help getting back out.
DPH says standard tools were unable to reach the dog, so officers linked equipment together and gathered additional resources. Over a dozen catch poles were tied together and one officer brought a 20-ft extendable pole in order to reach the dog and gently nudge it towards the other side of the pipe where two officers were waiting.

DPH says the plan finally worked after several attempts and the young shepherd was safely removed. The dog had no tags or microchip and was taken to Brandywine Valley SPCA, with officials describing the pup as having a friendly personality.
