Officials: Land Donation Permanently Protects Forest Parcel in Wicomico

WICOMICO CO., MD - Maryland’s Board of Public Works has approved the acquisition of 19 acres of forested area in Wicomico County by the Department of Natural Resources.

The forest land is planned for preservation in order to protect water quality within the Nanticoke River watershed, to the benefit of local fish and shellfish species.

During their meeting yesterday, November 29th, Maryland’s Board of Public Works approved the $49,000 purchase of the Wicomico land which will now be managed by the Maryland Forest Service as part of Chesapeake Forest Lands.

The area has been identified as a core habitat for Forest Interior Dwelling Species, a group which includes birds such as barred owls, woodpeckers, whip-or-wills, and red-shouldered hawks.
