MARYLAND - Eight Eastern Shore counties have received a combined $5.7 million for community development projects.

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development announced the funding through the state’s seven State Revitalization Programs for 31 projects and activities that promote community development and economic growth.

“To win the decade, we must be intentional about building sustainable, vibrant communities that lift all Marylanders,” said Gov. Moore. “These investments will support local and county leaders in their vital work to drive economic growth and create stronger pathways to prosperity in all parts of the state. Together, we will continue to revitalize our communities and reveal Maryland's full potential.”

Officials say the seven programs will support revitalization and redevelopment projects and activities including: business expansion and retention; façade and streetscape improvements; homeownership and home rehabilitation incentives; commercial improvement programs; community facilities; mixed-use development, and demolition activities.

Projects were awarded in Cecil, Kent, Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties.

Projects include:

  • Stabilization of the Town Hall in the Town of Goldsboro to provide safe public access and more effective town governance. The project will support and enhance programming for seniors and youth, government functions, and business development activities (Caroline County);
  • Continuation of the rehabilitation of the Crisfield Armory as an entertainment venue and community use space. The Crisfield Armory was severely damaged during Hurricane Sandy which has prevented community use for several years (Somerset County);
  • Construction of the Salisbury Town Center, an infill development project that includes mixed used residential apartments and retail spaces, streetscaping, public utilities improvements, and the construction of a public parking garage (Wicomico County);
  • And the continuation of a facade improvement program that will provide secured grant funds for property owners to improve building facades and interiors in the Downtown Business District or within the Pocomoke City Sustainable Communities Boundaries (Worcester County).

“DHCD is proud to support our local partners on the Eastern Shore in their efforts to build stronger communities, create loveable places, and invest in Maryland’s future,” said DHCD Secretary Jake Day. “Each of these 31 projects plays a key role in our revitalization efforts and aligns with Moore-Miller Administration priorities.”

The Fiscal Year 2024 State Revitalization Program awards include 219 projects, awarded a total $63.7 million. Projects in 23 of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions received awards through one or more of the programs. For a full list of awards, visit FY24 State Revitalization Program Awards.
