Sussex County towns have been grappling with the topic of marijuana over the past few months, and the conversation has made its way down the Indian River and into Millsboro. At tonight's town council meeting, members will discuss, and potentially vote on, a draft ordinance that could restrict the growth and sale of marijuana in the town.
Neighbor Shirley Townsend says she supports it medically, but is not sure the town should take on fully.
"The town of Millsboro, I think we're just not ready for something like that. I'm sure there are pros and cons, but I feel like people will use it and abuse it."
Townsend worries that allowing the sale of marijuana will create a negative culture for the family-friendly town,
"I don't really want to see people sitting on park benches, smoking marijuana, and everyone can smell it - and people driving." said Townsend.
The town council had unanimously voted back in September to have the ordinance drafted. Town Manager Jamie Burk said that while he doesn't know how the council would vote tonight, he wanted the town to stay on top of the issue since Delaware changed their marijuana laws.
Some, like Amanda Rosenfeld, fully support marijuana in the town and in neighboring areas. She believes that personal opinions shouldn't become law,
"I think you should keep your values within your family - and not extend them to everyone else in the community because they are different people from you and may not share your core values." said Rosenfeld
Other towns in Sussex County that have already banned the growth and sale of marijuana include Dewey Beach, Rehoboth Beach, and Bethany Beach. Updates from the meeting will be posted on our website.
