BRIDGEVILLE, Del.-- Delaware State Police are currently investigating an an officer-involved shooting from overnight in Bridgeville.

Officials say they arrived to the Canterbury Apartments just before 11 p.m. last night, October 4th, on a report of a home invasion in which a suspect allegedly forced his way into a home with a firearm. The suspect reportedly fled before police arrived.

Then, at about 11:30 p.m., a Perdue AgriBusiness Feed Mill employee called authorities to report a co-worker had come to this business and said it was his last day, according to police. That co-worker, police say, showed a gun and told the employee to call police before fleeing.

Police say the suspect in the armed home invasion and the Perdue AgriBusiness suspect were determined to be the same man.

Officers then arrived on the scene near Newton and Adams Road where they found the suspect walking in a field. According to authorities, the man was ordered to stop before he fired his weapon twice. A trooper returned fire.

The suspect was then found dead from a gunshot wound in the middle of Newton Road, according to the Delaware State Police. Authorities say he had a gun and one shell casing was beside him.

It is unclear whether the man's injuries were a result of the gunfire exchange with police or were self-inflicted, police say.

The suspect was identified as a 23-year-old from Bridgeville, but his identity is being withheld pending the notification of his family. The involved trooper will be placed on administrative leave, according to police, while an investigation is conducted, as is standard operating procedures.

The investigation is still underway, and police ask anyone with information to contact them at 302-741-2703.

As of this morning, October 5th, troopers were using a K-9 to search the area around Newton Road in Bridgeville. WBOC's Kristina DeRobertis was at the scene of the investigation.
