MILFORD, Del.- City council greenlit plans to install brand new public restrooms downtown, and many are flushed with excitement.

From Milford's museum to its Riverwalk, there is plenty to do downtown. However, as Milford neighbor Khyron Reynolds puts it, there is "not a lot of places to do your 'doo.'"

People have been relying on the city's porta-potties to take care of business, or hoping to sneak past the library's 'cardholders only' policy.

"You can't go anywhere," said Cynthia Quevedo who works in the city. "If you go in the stores they say 'I'm sorry, customers only."

Sara Bluhm, Milford's economic development & community engagement administrator, said we can expect new restrooms across from the library on Washington Street as soon as May.

"It's called the Dakota model and it has two stalls on each side, one for men and one for women," she explained.

The bathrooms will be constructed and installed by a company called CXT, the same company which installed public bathrooms behind Milford's Boys and Girls Club.

The bathrooms will be pre-fabricated in a warehouse, shipped to Milford and then dropped in by a crane.

"All the site work on the property will be complete prior to arrival and [the company] will pretty much just plop it right down on top and they should be utilized within a day or two," Bluhm said.

Reynolds said it's about time to flush away the porta-potty problems.

"There is joy in me now, knowing I will be able to comfortably use the bathroom without having to wonder what was that, who did this and why is there a whole shoe in the toilet?"

Council set a price limit of $250,000 for the installation. Bluhm said the bathrooms will be monitored with security cameras, cleaned on a regular basis and will most likely be locked overnight.
