Educators and Parents React to Gov. Carney's Recommendation to Return to Hybrid Learning

DELAWARE - Delaware Governor John Carney is urging schools in the state to switch back to hybrid learning on Monday the 11th.

The governor and the Division of Public Health say schools are safe environments, but not everyone agrees with reopening the classrooms.

Jessica Jones from Millsboro couldn't be happier to return to hybrid.

She said, "The kids, they need the interaction with their peers and their friends, and they need to socialize. Being at home and being cooped up just kind of, you know, has their minds off."

Jones's daughter Dakota attends the Indian River School District.

She says online classes are not good for her, "When I was in school online, I didn't really get anything they said, because it's really hard to explain stuff on the computer. I'm one of those visual learners, where you have to write it down and everything, so when we were in hybrid, I got better grades because I understood it better."

Not all school districts in Delaware are in the same position, either. Not all schools switched to virtual after the governor's recommendation in mid-December.

Some parents aren't as thrilled to send their kids back just yet, no matter what the governor says.

"I think that they're doing everything they can, but I don't think that it's enough, and when it comes to the safety aspect, it really comes down to transparency," said Shawn Cortijo, whose son attends the Cape Henlopen District.

The Delaware State Education Association agrees. President Stephanie Ingram said schools should stay virtual until the threat of the virus has lessened.

"COVID is ever-present and it's a danger, you know, inside and outside the building. It's just something that we need to get a get a grip on before we ask people to, you know, risk their lives and livelihoods by stepping back into the building," Ingram said.

Governor Carney's recommendation is not an executive order, so each school district has the final say on whether we'll see some kids back in the classrooms on Monday.
