MILFORD, Del.- Genesis HealthCare on Wednesday said an additional three people had died in connection to COVID-19 at its Milford center, a day after confirming several deaths at the facility.

Richard Feifer, the chief medical officer for Genesis HealthCare, said on Wednesday 12 residents had died at the Milford Center. A statement emailed Wednesday night said a total of 61 residents had either tested positive for COVID-19 or are presumed positive for the coronavirus because of symptoms.

The statement said 30 of those residents are asymptomatic.

"COVID-19 is an unprecedented situation that many families are dealing with right now - regardless of the facility their loved one may be in across the country. No one ever thought that their elders would ever have to deal with a worldwide pandemic. We are not the only ones faced with dealing with how the virus is affecting our vulnerable population," he said in a statement that was identical issued on Tuesday with the exception of updated statistics.

Feifer said 13 staff members at the Milford Center have tested positive for COVID-19 and the facility is doing everything it can to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

Health officials on Wednesday said 7 people had died at Milford Center. A total of 28 residents at long-term care facilities in Delaware have died in connection to COVID-19, accounting for more than half of the 46 deaths tied to coronavirus in the state.

When asked about the discrepancy between Genesis' numbers and the state's, Delaware Division of Public Health spokeswoman Jen Brestel said "I can only report what we have officially. We are reporting seven COVID-19 related deaths at Milford Genesis Milford Center as of today."
