MILLSBORO, Del.- NRG announced Thursday its intention to retire several of its power plants following the recent PJM capacity auction results. One of those plants is the coal-powered Indian River plant near Millsboro, which has an anticipated retirement date of June 2022. NRG said closing these plants was a difficult, but necessary decision in light of the low market prices.

"We understand the impact this decision will have on our employees and the local communities," said NRG Senior Manager Dave Schrader in a statement.

Schrader said employees will have the opportunity to apply for open positions within NRG. The company will also provide transition assistance and severance in accordance with NRG policies and will engage in effects bargaining with union leadership for represented employees, according to Schrader.

NRG has not yet announced its plants for the Indian River property after it closes.
