LEWES, Del.- Authorities say a bicyclist critically injured after she was struck by a pickup truck in Lewes late last week has died.
Delaware State Police said that shortly before 6 p.m., Thursday, June 17, a Ford F-250 pickup truck towing a dual axle dump trailer, operated by a Georgetown, Del., man, was traveling westbound on Shady Road and approaching the intersection of Plantations Road with a green light. Police said that meantime, Madison Cunningham, 19, of Douglasville, Pa., was riding her bicycle westbound on Shady Road in the designated bike lane.
Troopers said that as the pickup truck started to proceed through the intersection, Cunningham failed to see the pickup truck and trailer before turning left and impacting the right side of the trailer within the middle of the intersection. As a result of the impact, Cunningham was knocked to the ground. She was flown to an area hospital where she was admitted in critical condition. On Friday, June 18, Cunningham died from her injuries.
The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate this accident. Anyone with information should contact Cpl/3 K. Argo by calling 302-644-5020.
