HARRINGTON, Del.- Delaware State Police on Saturday released the name of a man killed in a late Thursday afternoon crash in Harrington.
Troopers identified the victim as William J. Thompson, 22, of Camden, Del.
Troopers said that shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday, a Yamaha YZF sport style motorcycle was traveling southbound on South DuPont Highway in the right lane and approaching State Fair Boulevard. Police said that meantime, a Buick Encore was stopped at the posted stop sign on State Fair Boulevard, preparing to cross the southbound lanes of South DuPont Highway and enter the median crossover to travel northbound.
Police said that due to the motorcycle's extreme rate of speed, the driver of the Buick was unable to perceive the motorcycle and began to cross over the southbound travel lanes. Police said the Yamaha struck the left side of the Buick on the left rear passenger door, causing the Buick to rotate nearly 180 degrees before coming to rest. After impact, the operator of the motorcycle came to rest in the left travel lane.
The operator of the motorcycle, William J. Thompson, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died.
The driver of the Buick, an 81-year-old Dover, Del., woman, was flown to Christiana Hospital for what are described as non-life-threatening injuries. She was treated and will be released.
