Delmarva Alpha Kappa Alpha Members on V.P. Kamala Harris

SALISBURY, Md.- Women were donning their pink and pearls Wednesday in solidarity with new U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.

Local chapter members of Harris' sorority say they are proud to represent the same organization.

"We are ecstatic in honor of our Vice President. I think words escape me because this is a time we've never seen before, but I am standing here as a proud member," said Joyce Ferrera, President of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Delta Sigma Omega Chapter in Salisbury.

The group acknowledges this is also an historic moment for every woman in America and many other people of color.

"For me it means the first, but not the last and I'm grateful that she's not only representing the women of The Divine Nine, not only a women of Alpha Kappa Alpha, but a woman for our nation," said Dionne Church, Vice President of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Delta Sigma Omega Chapter in Salisbury.

The Divine Nine are the nine chartered Greek organizations established in the 1900's at universities across the country. They were created for African-Americans who were not permitted to join white sororities and fraternities.

Sharing that same struggle makes these organizations feel more like family.

The vice president has also inspired those from immigrant families.

"When I saw that it was possible it kind of sparked that fire yet again to reconsider again to going back into that role of wanting to be Jamaican Prime Minister and by seeing her doing it and getting the support from the United States as vice president, I know that it's possible," Kadeem Turnbull, 2018 University of Maryland Eastern Shore Alumnus.
