SEAFORD, DE - Sussex County drivers can expect smoother travels on Route 20, Stein Highway, as the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has confirmed a repavement project set to begin in February of next year. The project will cover 3.5 miles of road, stretching from Hollyoak Drive to Sussex Avenue, and include additional improvements, including sidewalks, signage, and road barriers. It is expected to be completed in October 2024.
Many drivers are eagerly anticipating the benefits of the roadwork. The current state of Route 20 has been a cause for concern among locals, with numerous, holes, bumps, and patches that have been in need of attention.
One resident expressed enthusiasm, stating,
"It’s about time, it’s been in really bad shape, with a lot of bumps. They’ve been patching it for a while, so if it’s getting repaved, I’m looking forward to it."
Nakyah Taylor, who works off Route 20 echoed the sentiment, saying, "I think it’s a great idea. It has big cracks in it, and it hasn’t been done in years. Let’s get it going."
Craig Dimes, the owner of Hungry Howies located off Route 20, emphasized the road's impact on his business and is looking forward to the project getting underway.
"I’m just glad it’s gonna be done. Obviously, we run a delivery business, so it can be a hassle in the meantime, but when it’s done, it’s done."
The road repavement initiative is part of a broader statewide paving and rehabilitation program, identifying multiple Sussex County roads based on pavement distress data.
