CAMBRIDGE, Md. - City officials say sewage and stormwater overflowed from a sanitary manhole last night because of the heavy rainfall in Cambridge.
They say the manhole was at Water and Vue de Lieu streets. The overflow started around 10:50 p.m. and they believe it continued until 4:20 a.m.
City officials say a local noticed the spill and contacted the city.
They estimate 2,000 gallons flowed from the manhole into the stormwater catchment basin and discharged into the Choptank River.
Officials say the affected area was cleaned and lime was spread, which helps to disinfect. They say a sign was posted at the location of the discharge, and that the overflow did not impact drinking water.
The city says they continue to work on reducing strains in the sewer and stormwater systems.
