MARYLAND - The faster you drive, the more you would pay under a bill being considering by state lawmakers in Annapolis.
The senate bill would make fines proportional to how fast you're driving over the speed limit. Currently, a driver going 15 miles over the speed limit would receive the same $40 fine that a driver going 45 miles over the speed limit.
If passed, the $40 minimum would remain, but for drivers going 40 or more miles over the limit, they'd be hit with a $350 fine.
Salisbury Police Chief Dave Meinschein tells WBOC he feels the legislation could increase driver compliance. "So of course, the risk of an accident, the risk of serious injury increases substantially when the speeds obviously increases people's reaction time changes," he said.
Drivers like Eric Blue, Penny Ritter and Jackie Cox voiced support.
"It's a good gesture, but the best method is obey the speed limit," Blue said.
"Proportionate to the speed itself does make sense," Ritter told us.
"It's only fair. People who are going 70 and a 40 mile an hour zone ought to pay more than someone who's going 45," Cox said.
There isn't much time left for this legislation. Although the House version has advanced to the Senate, Maryland's 2025 legislative session ends on Monday, April 7. If passed and signed by Governor Wes Moore, the bill would go into law in October.
