SALISBURY, MD - The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says they are investigating an incident after a "1st grade student brought an unloaded handgun" to Beaver Run Elementary School.

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says they are working with the Wicomico County Public Schools in investigating an incident where a "1st grade student brought an unloaded handgun" to Beaver Run Elementary School.

The sheriff's office says that before dismissal, a teacher noticed what appeared to be a handgun in the possession of a 7-year-old student. They say the student brought the unloaded gun to school on Tuesday morning.

Captain Rich Wiersberg with the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says an investigation is underway. "How did this individual, this young person get in possession of the handgun? So we're looking into that to see if any charges are going to be necessary," he said.

According to county law enforcement, the teacher and the school administration followed all safety procedures by "notifying the appropriate public school personnel, law enforcement, and parents."

Wicomico County Education Association President Joan Smith praised the teacher who acted quickly: "Our teachers are always looking out for the best interest of our students, thank God for that. They are aware, they know what to do if something would happen."

The Wicomico County Public Schools and Beaver Run Elementary School are cooperating with the sheriff's office in the investigation. Sheriffs say all the students and staff at the school were safely dismissed without further incident.
