SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Sussex Tech High School in Georgetown will have safer school buses this year. The Sussex Technical Board of Education approved the purchase of a new security camera system for all of the district's buses.

The Sussex Technical School District has been using security cameras on school buses for over 12 years. However, the new and improved system will make it much easier for school security personnel to watch footage.

In the past, the security cameras were owned by independent contractors. Now, the school district will be fully responsible for operating the security system.

Sussex Tech High School Director of Administration, Hud Athey, says having all security cameras running on the same platform will make things run more efficiently.

Every bus will be equipped with multiple interior cameras, used to monitor students as they head to and from school. As well as one exterior camera, that is meant to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses.

Sussex Tech Principal, Matthew Donovan, says the interior cameras are meant to help students and not scare them.

According to a press release from the Sussex Vocational Technical School District, "the camera system operates on a passive monitoring system and also utilizes a passive GPS system that can pinpoint locations of incidents and vehicle statistics including speed, brakes, indicator status and stop-arm deployment."

In addition to the purchase of the new camera system, the district will also allocate funds towards maintenance.
