Water Street Closed

CAMBRIDGE, MD — Water Street in Cambridge, known for its susceptibility to flooding after intense storms, experienced another bout last night, leaving neighbors surprised by the extent of the flooding as they woke up this morning.

Access to the marina was temporarily closed as local law enforcement and crews assessed the flood status. By noon, it had been re-opened.

Local residents headed to the docks to check on their boats. Byre Taylor woke up this morning and took a walk to the marina,

"Aside from a few sails that have been ripped up, there's been no damage. We had high water, not up into any of the buildings. I think we got off fairly easily from what came through," noted Taylor.

"Went to bed thinking it was over – and then around 2 AM it's in the living room. You don't know what's gonna happen or when the tide is gonna stop coming, but just thank the Lord it wasn't worse than what it was," said neighbor Scott Todd.

While flooding started to recede back into the Choptank River, some roads remained covered in standing water. Residents navigated their commutes, with a few opting for wise three-point turns. Concerns about the future impact of high tides prompted suggestions for permanent infrastructure, such as gates, for frequently flooded roads.

"The future is that the high tides will be here with us even stronger in the future. I came to scope it out, beneath the knee here, but it looks really deep out there," said neighbor Howard John Connely.
