A nor’easter brushing by Delmarva’s coast has brought windy, wet conditions to our shores, and the impacts are already being felt as we begin the weekend.

High winds and rough surf are putting pressure on beaches along the Delaware coast, with Bethany Beach officials keeping a close eye on the dunes as the storm continues.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources has signed a contract with First State Crane Service to operate the new Indian River Inlet Sand Bypass System on March 3. Officials say DNREC is now set to resume sand pumping later this month for beach and dune nourishment with that new system.

Storms over the past two weeks have caused noticeable erosion at Assateague State Park, where sections of the beach are now marked by steep drop-offs.

DNREC is warning people that snow-covered sand dunes are not a playground for sledding, snowboarding, or other activities.

It’s been over a week since a powerful nor’easter battered Bowers Beach, and restoration efforts remain underway to rebuild and strengthen the dunes.
