A former Justice Department prosecutor has filed a lawsuit that claims his recent firing was politically motivated retribution for his work on prosecuting Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Michael Gordon and two other former department employees are plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed Thursday against the department, Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Executive Office of the President. Dozens of Justice Department attorneys have been fired, demoted or forced out or have quit since President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. Gordon and the other plaintiffs — Patricia Hartman and Joseph Tirrell — appear to be the first of them to sue.

The U.S. Congress is preparing to subpoena testimony from Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking. Maxwell's crimes have resurfaced amid pressure on President Donald Trump and the Department of Justice to release information about Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell has always maintained her innocence. If subpoenaed, she would join a list of convicted criminals who have testified before Congress, including Michael Cohen, Joseph Valachi, Michael Milken, and Jack Ruby. These testimonies have influenced history, political narratives and public perception, especially about controversies mired in conspiracy theories.

Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey who as a federal prosecutor in Manhattan worked on cases against Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jeffrey Epstein, has told colleagues in a note that “fear is the tool of a tyrant” and that her firing without reason should fuel “a fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power.” In a message obtained by The Associated Press, she wrote that “if a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain." She told colleagues that they should not let that happen.
