DOVER, Del.- Cable barriers will be installed along 23 miles of State Route 1 in Delaware, the same road where police say a father and his four daughters were killed Friday in a crash involving a vehicle that crossed over the grassy median between both directions of the roadway.
Delaware's Department of Transportation will install 11.5 miles of high-tension cable barrier this year along 11.5 miles between the area south of Middletown and Odessa and Smyrna, according to C.R. McLeod, an agency spokesman.
DelDOT will then install another 12 miles of cable barrier between Smyrna and North Dover, McLeod said.
Although McLeod said DelDOT had already planned to install the cable barriers, the move follows a crash last week in which police said 61-year-old Audie Trinidad, of Teaneck, New Jersey, and his four daughters were killed in a crash late Friday afternoon. Police said Trinidad's wife was seriously injured but survived the crash.
Police said the family was riding in a minivan along SR 1 near Townsend when a southbound work truck crossed the median for unknown reasons and hit the northbound minivan and another car.
On Sunday, police identified the truck driver as 44-year-old Alvin S. Hubbard Jr. of East New Market, Md. The driver of the other car involved has been identified as 24-year old Brian C. Kern of Bethlehem, Pa.
Delaware State Police say they are continuing to investigate the crash. No charges have been filed at this time.
