CRISFIELD, Md.- Somers Cove Apartments, under the Housing Authority of Crisfield, will soon undergo a new study. After millions of dollars in relief aid could not completely repair damage from Superstorm Sandy, Somerset County officials are exploring other options.
Situated in a low-lying, vulnerable flood area, the housing complex is considered high risk for future flooding. Somerset County Planning Director Gary Pusey, said one of the options being considered is relocating the housing complex, possibly to Princess Anne.
"Seventy-five thousand dollars is set aside for the study, which will explore several different options. It's a very vulnerable area to future flooding and there's a lot of people at risk in that area," he said, when referring to the present location of Somers Cove Apartments.
Randy Wilkins lives in Somers Cove and said he wouldn't be happy about moving.
"I wouldn't like it. When you uproot somebody from a place they're use to living in people won't like that. Crisfield is our home," he said.
Pusey said he anticipates the study will take several months and be completed by July. He said the study will then be forwarded for review by the county and other entities to consider the best possible solution.
