Proposed Smoking Ban in Salisbury

Salisbury, M.D.- In Wicomico County, a proposed legislation is seeking to prohibit smoking on any land leased or operated by the city of Salisbury.

The ban would include government facilities or public parks. One of the city's goals with the smoking ban is to protect children and elderly people who are at a higher risk of second-hand smoke.

"I think banning it from this area entirely would create a nice atmosphere downtown. I think it's appropriate to not allow smoking," says Kathleen Hevener.

The city of Salisbury says studies have found that tobacco contributes to air pollution and can be just as harmful to non-smokers.

Although some are in support of the proposed smoking ban, others say they don't find the ban necessary.

"I would have to disagree since me personally, I work here and we don't have time to hurry up and go to a spot to smoke," says Solomon Price.

The proposed legislation would also prohibit vaping, also known as"e-cigarettes."

The next public meeting to discuss the possible smoking ban will take place August 28th.
