DOVER, Del. -- Work and inspection of a sinkhole in Dover's Woodcrest community was delayed on Tuesday because of rain.
City officials said the sinkhole, located in a fenced area of Schoolhouse Lane, was recovered with dirt on Tuesday. The sinkhole was first reported on Monday night, though Sharon Duca, Dover's director of public works, said wet weather on Tuesday prevented a workers from getting a thorough look at the situation beneath the ground.
"The initial view we had of it does not make it appear the pipe has deteriorated under the road but of course we want to make certain of that before we do the repairs so that we can handle the entire scope of work," said
Duca said heavy rain from last week was suspected as the cause behind the sinkhole and work on it would resume on Wednesday.
Mayor Robin Christiansen said on Monday police could block off the area, if needed.
