SALISBURY, Md. - The brand new Rivers Edge Apartments and Studio for the Arts on Fitzwater Street in Salisbury is going up quickly and working to replace the eyesore that sat in the same location for the better part of a decade.
It was in January of this year when crews began to tear down the former Rivers Edge apartment building in Salisbury. It was a shell of a building that sat vacant and unused for about seven years on Fitzwater Street in Salisbury. Once that old building was done, the work on the new complex began. Currently, the project is a little behind schedule because of weather delays and difficulties created by the old building.
"We took down a massive building here that was built to withstand, I don't know, a tsunami. In fact, there is still a section of the building over there where you can see probably seven or eight foot deep concrete foundations with rebar that they are literally having to use a heavy piece of equipment to take out," said Andrew Hanson, the Vice President of the Osprey Property Company.
But it is not something that is going to delay the project for too long. The new complex is geared towards local artists and will have thousands of square feet for displays and gathering space. Rivers Edge is also in the downtown of a city that is looking to revitalize that location and bring more people to the area and project leaders believe the complex will add to that revitalization.
"This is reinvestment on this part of town that is sorely needed. We are excited because we are not quite the first ones in but Rivers Edge is on its way to being redeveloped, the marina next door has work going on from the city, we have the trolley that now brings folks down here," Hanson said.
