Onancock, Va.- The town of Onancock is discussing implementing surveillance cameras after burglaries and a murder. Neighbors Stephanie and Bob Roberts say they moved from California four years ago and were drawn to the town's safe nature.
"We moved her from California, and we just like the quaintness of the whole town and the fact that it didn't have a crime rate really won us," said Stephanie Roberts.
The town manager told WBOC the discussions are in the very early stages. If the town pursued the cameras, the cameras would not be facial recognition, but more to give police an idea of where a suspect might have ran off too or what cars were in the area.
Store owner Timothy Smith says the town needs to act.
"The town should pick up it's part of the responsibility and put some high quality stuff in," said Smith.
Stephanie Roberts hopes the town does something.
"You're going to start to see other things go downhill and I'd hate to see that happen to this town," said Roberts.
The town is considering the costs of different options. The cost will largely depend on how many cameras the town would like to implement.
