Laurel Shooting

LAUREL, DE - The Laurel community is still reeling after a tragic shooting yesterday afternoon that resulted in the death of one 18-year-old and left two others, a 15 and 13 year old, injured.

While the suspects remain at large, Delaware State Police have confirmed it is not believed to be an active shooter situation, and public risk is low. All schools in The Laurel School District were closed today as a result. The district announced today they will re-open tomorrow with increased police presence, security, and resources for students.

But as the investigation continues, many neighbors are asking what needs to be done to prevent further youth violence.

Neighbors that spoke to WBOC discussed a possible curfew, increased youth activities, increased school-involvement, and more parental surveillance.

One neighbor, Christie Cahall, who lives just a block away from the scene of the shooting -- says along with those suggestions, more police presence is simply needed in the area,

“They aren’t really there, they only really show up when something bad happens, they aren’t out riding the street watching people," said Cahall.

The Town of Laurel did recently approve a 30% property tax increase with the purpose of hiring two new officers. There have also been public hearings held regarding adding surveillance cameras in public spaces, like parks. The town has noted their commitment to combating rising crime rates.

But some neighbors like Andrea Timmons say they are just simply losing hope,

“I’m not really sure anything can be done, you’re just not safe anywhere. You always have to watch your back. At this point Laurels been dealing with a bunch of violence and crime and at this point you wake up in the morning, see on the news there's a shooting, and it’s just another day," said Timmons.
