EASTON, MD - In a belated Christmas present for extreme sports enthusiasts, Easton unveiled its state-of-the-art skate park and pump track, marking an adrenaline-fueled milestone for the community. The grand opening of the facility, which took place Thursday, drew in several skaters and bikers eager to test their skills on the brand-new course at the North Easton Sports Complex.
This thrilling addition to Easton's recreational landscape was made possible through a $7 million bond allocated to the town. Mayor Megan Cook expressed her hopes that the project would foster community engagement and cater to individuals of all ages.
"This is a new addition, something different. It's not on the Eastern Shore. So it's a great amenity for our kids and adults alike. Everyone, actually," Mayor Megan Cook remarked after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The journey from conceptualization to the opening day was quick.
"We got approval back in the spring, so we designed it and built it by the end of October. So we've been doing some final punch list items over the last week, so it was much, uh, very accelerated," explained Rick Van Emburgh, reflecting on the expedited timeline.
The project itself costed around $500,000.
For veteran skater Joe Genco, the new park signifies a significant stride towards addressing the needs of the community.
"Truly, to be honest, in my opinion, the Eastern Shore of Maryland does not have enough skateparks. So this, for the community, is just amazing because the kids need something to do," Genco expressed his enthusiasm.
Billy Peterson, a skater and Ridgely skate shop owner of Central Skate Supply, anticipates that the new park will attract a diverse age group.
"A lot of skaters have been popping up since this park's been here. I know it hasn't been open except for today, but you know, it's nice." Peterson went on to say, "People from all walks of life do this, old, young, less fortunate, more fortunate. It's all over the place."
The skate park and pump track will be open every day from dawn until dusk, inviting skaters from all walks of life to partake in the thrill of this exciting new addition to Easton's recreational offerings.
