SALISBURY, MD - The Salisbury Zoo has a new canine addition with the arrival of a female red wolf from the Wolf Conservation Center.
The 5-year-old red wolf, Skyrae, was recently transferred to the Zoo from the Conservation Center in New York as part of the Red Wolf SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program. The Zoo says Skyrae was recommended to mate with their male red wolf Bowie, 3, who already lives at the Zoo.
The Zoo says Salisbury Zoo Registrar Jessica Mandelson flew to New York to pick Skyrae up on December 15th and that Skyrae has already been introduced to Bowie. Because of a physical exam at the Wolf Conservation Center, Skyrae did not require quarantine and is on exhibit, according to the Zoo.
The Salisbury Zoo reports Skyrae and Bowie are getting along well so far.
The Zoo’s previous female red wolf, Shiloh, passed away earlier this year at the age of 11. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates a total wild red wolf population at 21-23, while the SAFE captive population is estimated at 267.
