President Donald Trump is threatening to deploy military forces to more Democratic-led cities. On Sunday, the president added Baltimore to a list that already includes Chicago and New York. This move comes in a dispute with Maryland's Democratic governor, Wes Moore, who has criticized Trump's use of federal power to combat crime and homelessness. Trump mentioned Moore in a Truth Social post, suggesting he might repeat a National Guard deployment similar to one earlier this year in Los Angeles. Moore had invited Trump to Maryland to discuss public safety. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has criticized Trump's actions, calling them a manufactured crisis.
The Mississippi National Guard will deploy 200 troops to Washington as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing federal policing and immigration efforts in the nation’s capital. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said in a statement Monday that he has approved the deployment of approximately 200 troops to Washington, D.C. Reeves said that crime is out of control and “something must be done.” Mississippi joins three other GOP-led states that have pledged to deploy hundreds of National Guard members to the nation’s capital to bolster the Republican administration’s operation to overhaul policing in the Democratic-led city through a federal crackdown on crime and homelessness.
West Virginia is sending 300 to 400 members of its National Guard to the nation’s capital to assist in the Trump’s administration’s takeover of the city’s police department. The move by a nearby state comes as hundreds of District of Columbia National Guard were activated this week to back up local law enforcement in what the Republican administration calls an effort to crack down on crime and homelessness in the District of Columbia. Gov. Patrick Morrisey said in a post Saturday on X that he was deploying “300-400 skilled personnel” from the West Virginia National Guard to support Trump’s “initiative to make D.C. safe and beautiful.”
