They say it happened around 12:44 a.m. in the Unit Block of S. New Street, just south of West Division Street. Troopers responded to the area for a reported crash. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a 2013 Nissan Murano that had struck a tree on the east side of the road.

A witness says they saw multiple people leaving the area in a silver car that was later identified as a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. Officers located a vehicle matching that description on Maryland Avenue, but when they approached the Sonata in a police vehicle, the driver accelerated at a high speed. Prior to this acceleration, officers say they saw one person flee the car.

DSP say that their preliminary investigation showed the Suburban attempted to pass the Ram truck in a no-passing zone and as a result sideswiped the driver's side of the Ford. Then, as the Suburban returned to the eastbound lane, its passenger side hit the front of the driver's side of the Ram. Because of this, the Suburban exited the south edge of the roadway, re-entered Westville Road, and exited the north edge of the roadway. The Suburban then struck a tree and caught fire.

DSP says the preliminary investigation revealed that the robbery suspect had been to the home earlier in the day on December 16, then returned to the home around 6:00 p.m. that day with three additional suspects. The four men forced their way into the home, with one displaying a firearm. Once inside, police say the suspects demanded money and other items. One of the suspects struck the victim on the top of his head, then all four suspects fled the home on foot. The victim sustained minor injuries following the robbery.
